Good friend and trumpeter Jack Cassidy called me in to help out with some video needs for a project of his. Filmed in a classroom at the Old Town School of Folk Music the group consisted of trumpet, tenor sax, piano, acoustic bass and drums. It is always fun to grab the gear and film familiar faces and friends.
Working on a batch of tunes for the upcoming UIC Jazz Ensemble recording directed by Andy Baker. Recorded at Tone Zone Recording this new record will feature a variety of tunes from Hoe Down (Oliver Nelson) and Infant Eyes (Wayne Shorter) to Consolation (Kenny Wheeler).
The BakerzMillion jazz sextet lead by pianist Steve Million and trombonist Andy Baker, features an all star cast: Victor Garcia, trumpet; Jim Gailloreto, saxophones; Matt Ferguson, bass; Tim Davis, drums. I had the pleasure of mixing and mastering the debut record Mood Point and this past weekend was able to setup a remote multitrack recording at Andy's Jazz Club over the Valentine's Day weekend for their second and live upcoming album. Armed with a mix of vintage Neumann, AKG and Gefell microphones I was able to complete a setup in record time, close to the side of the stage. Although a tremendous amount of setup and work, the atmosphere at Andy's was animated and bustling and lent itself to energized and lively sets of music by BakerzMillion. Live records always have a tremendous energy to them and this one is no exception. This band is in perfect synchronicity and the soloist are all astounding. Stay tuned for more updates regarding this new and anticipated release.
Talented composer and trombonist Luke Malewicz is finishing up his debut CD. He has a unique style of writing that lends a certain freedom to the other members of the quintet to create a collective improvisation over flowing melodies and winding harmonies. Be on the look for this album in the up coming months and check out Luke Malewicz's website for performance dates and news.
